Most helpful customer reviews

198 of 201 people found the following review helpful.
Great things come in small packages!
By D. Hall
I’ve only had this a week but I’ve already started using it a lot and have been pleasantly surprised seeing just how far I can push this little rascal!

You can take it anywhere as it’s the size of a small book and is very lightweight for a laptop. Traditional notebook laptops are designed to be desktop replacements, so they can end up too big, too heavy, and generally just too *much* for checking your email or editing a Word document in the few minutes you have whilst waiting for the train.

The U100 however, appears to more suitable for moving around frequently and using whenever you get a few moments to spare. It’s a great size, any larger than 10″ and it would no longer classify as a “netbook” class of laptop, any smaller and the screen would be less practical for serious use. Also, 10″ screens have the correct aspect ratio for webpage viewing, you don’t get wasted blank space at the sides as I’ve heard can happen with smaller screens.

It’s incredibly portable, surprisingly powerful when overclocked and RAM doubled, good value, nice to type on (80% size keys), and even looks good. It’s much more responsive running XP than I had expected, it actually behaves like a desktop PC! Microsoft has clearly removed a lot of their bloatware from XP to give these smaller systems the best chance of running quickly.

It performed well straight out of the box, but I spent a good couple of evenings setting it up *properly.* ie. removing the usual bundled bloatware (came with 3GB of Encarta pre-installed. *shudder*), 30 second trial versions of things you wouldn’t use anyway etc…. and now this baby is positively flying along!

So after removing the bloat, installing my own software (Office 2003/2007, MSN, Skype, AVG, Firefox 3, ZoneAlarm, Adobe PDF, heck even Photoshop CS3! Disabled unnessary processes from running in MSCONFIG. After setting everything up just the way nature intended, running PerfectDisk defragmenter and a boot-time defragmentation pass- my U100 was good to go. (well nearly) But there were a couple of things to do first…

On to…. the 1.6GHz Intel Atom PROCESSOR… well, overclocking it to be precise:

It’s great as it is out of the box, but you can get it to go 24% faster if you upgrade the BIOS to 1.10B then toggle Turbo mode with Fn + F10 when plugged into the mains. This won’t void your warranty as this is an official BIOS update from MSI. Fn + F10 when running on battery *underclocks* it so the processor only runs at 800Mhz and the screen brightness is reduced, prolonging the battery life. I know, it’s pretty cool. The light on the power switch shows you which of the 3 power modes is currently in use.

I tested the computer with a freeware utility called “cpuinfo.exe” to see what clock speeds *really* were when it was running at 1) “Eco mode” (green power light) 2) normal power mode (blue power light) and 3) “Turbo mode” (power light goes orange) I found that the CPU of the U100 now happily purrs along at 1984MHz when overclocked -so it’s basically increased by exactly 24% as the option states in the BIOS. You can choose between 8%, 16%, or 24%, but from what I’ve read it’s running stable for everyone at 24% (myself included) so you might as well set the overclock to maximum in the BIOS, you can always change it if you need to later.

This 24% increase in speed to just under 2GHz is awesome, especially when all the other Atom processor netbooks use the same processor and can’t be overclocked (to the best of my knowledge) so are stuck at 1.6GHz. So the U100 has a clear advantage over its rivals here.

What about the MEMORY?

Comes with 1GB, takes about 20 minutes and only about $40 to double that to its maximum 2GB. You don’t void the warranty to do this, and it’s dead easy. Take the 9 screws out underneath, pull the bottom half of the case off, just remember there is an on board stick of 1GB DDR2-667MHz RAM, and the expansion slot won’t recognise a 2GB module. So you fill the empty slot with 1GB and that’s it, memory doubled. I nearly bought a 2GB module by mistake before I read about the onboard memory.

The newer U120 apparently cannot be upgraded from its 1GB of RAM, has the same processor, and has a shorter battery life. You’re *much* better off with the U100 if only because you aren’t stuck with the 1GB RAM.

What about the HARD DRIVE?

The 160BG hard drive on this tiny 1Kg laptop is very generous- you wouldn’t be surprised to get half that capacity on a device such as this. In fact, some versions apparently do ship with an 80BG drive instead. With all my software installed on top of the Windows operating system, I still have 129GB to play with!

The inbuilt card reader works well with my camera’s Sony Memory Stick Pro card, and also takes SD cards and probably all the main memory card types.

WIRELESS card:

The built-in wireless card provides outstanding reception and I haven’t had any dropped connections since I bought it. It works with all 3 WLAN standards (802.11b/g/n) and naturally works with WEP/WPA wifi encryption.

The 1.3mp WEBCAM is good enough, the SPEAKERS are fine for a small laptop and quite usable, though when I’m at home I plug in my Creative I-Trigue 3300 (my favourite 2.1 system)

Thankfully the TOUCHPAD keys are beneath rather than to the sides of the touchpad which so many other netbooks I’ve seen have. That’s something I would struggle to ever be comfortable with. Although I like the touchpad, I plug in my USB mouse when using it at home as it’s easier to use.

PORTS: There are 3 usb ports (two left, one right), VGA port (when connected to my Samsung Syncmaster it can support the large 19″ LCD monitor’s native 1400 x 900 and looks great!) This is great, bearing in mind the onboard graphics card normally spends its time churning out the U100′s 1024 x 600 native resolution instead. It’s only when you want to duplicate the video output to an external LCD *as well* as the U100′s own screen that it will be forced to display the same 1024 x 600 resolution on the external monitor. This isn’t a problem, just an observation. Normally you’d only have one active or the other at any given time.

BLUETOOTH 2.1 is supported. I haven’t used it yet but it it’s nice to have with all the BT devices around these days.

Very useful row of 8 LEDs shows you Bluetooth, WLAN, sleep, battery, caps, num, scroll lock, and hard drive activity all in the same place.

Criticisms:

Full stop key and comma key are a slightly reduced size, but I’m used to it already. Only took a few days of touch typing to adjust.

Watch out you don’t buy the bilingual version in Canada. In London Drugs they sell it with the good old US keyboard, but in Staples they stock a U100 plagued with all sorts of extra keys meant for typing French accents more easily, and most of the keys have everything in French and English, the clutter is annoying. Too bad no one pointed out it’s probably no use to anyone outside of Quebec.

It is slightly front heavy due to the battery position, not a problem really, but something to bear in mind when positioning it on your lap for typing.

There’s no CD/DVD drive. You don’t need one anyway though, just transfer the contents from CDs onto a USB stick in another PC (or over the network) and use them as per usual. Optical drives take up space and use battery power, so not having them is no big loss, even though it seems strange to have a laptop with no CD drive in the 21 Century!

Two other important points:

YOU CAN INSTALL MAC OSX86 (a hacked version of OSX which can run on non-apple hardware. Google for the installer and a how-to guide.) It’s a hugely popular mod… so I hear.

You can install Linux on it- this deserves more attention than I just gave it.

(You can have dual boot, or even triple boot systems with Windows, Mac OSX86 and Linux depending on your personal preference and computer literacy)

“Netbooks” are supposed to compromise on power and functionality to increase their portability. Hence they are often thought of as mobile internet access devices incapable of doing anything even moderately groovy…

…but when you have one running at 2GHz, with 2GB of RAM, and 160GB hard drive and all the onboard peripherals you could wish for -it doesn’t look like such a compromise after all!

Youtube shows people playing various games on it, so don’t think that’s not a possibility either!

NEW: video comparison!
By A. Boston
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2FKNVALTPAMZK UPDATE WITH COMPARISON 12/09: This video is a comparison with the Acer Aspire One AOD250-1165 10.1 inch screen. Both the Acer and MSI are extremely similar. I’ve had the MSI wind for a year or so and I love it, I just bought the Acer as a gift for my boyfriend.

A couple things I did forget to mention. The Acer did have more “bloatware” (McAfee Internet Security Suite trial version; Google Desktop; Carbonite Online Backup; Acer GridVista) on it then the MSI wind, so I did remove a couple programs. This is really personal preference. Some people like to have as much as possible to get new software and try new programs. I like a bare bones netbook so I can add things according to my needs without really taking up much hard drive space. Both have 160GB hard drive. The Acer is a tad bit thinner when closed, but the MSI is listed at 2.3 lbs, while the Acer is 2.4 lb.

They have the very same video processor, though I said in my video I thought the Acer had a bit better video quality. This really could just have been the videos I watched (and the quality of them), not necessarily the video capabilities of the netbooks. Both are in fact available in white. The MSI wind wins for me based on the slightly larger keyboard and the matte screen.

ORIGINAL REVIEW OF THE MSI WIND:
At this price, you really can’t go wrong. They call them ‘netbooks’ but, really, they are just a small size laptop, because it had all the same features and more(hard drive, RAM, processor) as my 2 year old HP. Its different in that it weights about 1/2 of that laptop, which I think is just fantastic. Someone has already commented to me that you really don’t notice the smaller size 10″ screen once you start using this netbook, so its definitely the best on the bunch. Not huge 17″ or too small 8.9″.

I mainly use my laptop for internet, itunes, skype, AIM and occasional microsoft word. I also upload photos often and do a lot of typing(reviews like you’re reading now!). I did a great deal of comparisions with other wind models as well as other brands. I poked around [...] to get a feel for an issues people have, ways to easily fix little things, etc. I find that forum is really invaluable and will be a great source to use if you do get an MSI.

For other brands, I know acer is coming out with a 10″ screen soon and while that interested me, I liked everything I heard about MSI and didn’t want to wait, so this was my choice.

I specifically choose this one because the new u120 model is not ugradable in RAM to 2gb and I also like the price and look of this one better then the other. On a side note: I did see hear they will be releasing new model u120s that are upgradable in the next 2 months or so. but I don’t love the mix of black and white, I like my laptops strictly one color or the other. I also was more concerned with weight then battery power right now, and figured at a later date I can get a 6 cell battery and have both for the price it was to just get the one with only a 6 cell.

This little machine is adorable, but some won’t be so concerned with that. Start up is fast. The webcam and built in microphone work great, already tested them out on skype and it was VERY easy to figure my way around without using the manual disc. Screen is super bright and vibrant, and has a matte finish which is something I wanted. On my HP it was shiny and seemed to collect dust, fingerprints and really caught a glare in the sun.

Watching video/you tube is good. If you’re having trouble with it you might need to update your flash player. I think it can be said that it would be nice if the speakers went up a little louder, but thats not a big deal.

The trackpad is fine for me. Its smaller then a standard laptop, but I personally use a wireless mouse so it won’t bother me much, but even using it starting out initially it was not a huge difference. You can also easily turn off the trackpad with fn+f3, so that you don’t hit it while typing.

So far the wireless has been steadfast and haven’t had any problems. The color of the msi wind is pretty, its a shimmery creamy white color, as opposed to a shocking white. When I unplugged to go to battery power, it told me I had 2 hours and 11 minutes, on my 3 cell battery. I dimmed the screen a bit and it seems to have made a difference. The keyboard is easy to maneuver. I’m a pretty fast typer and so far have had no major flubs, aside from the backspace button is close to some other weird one, so I just have to be sure not to hit that. You’ve got shift keys on both sides, so no matter which you favor, you are all set! I’ve uploaded a photo with the stock photos so you can see the details of the keyboard.

I’ve uploaded some photos and the SD card from my camera easily went right into the built in slot. One thing I noticed upon starting up this system for the first time. The Internet explorer loaded on here seems to be an old one, so I couldn’t do the tab browsing that I am used to, rather then opening a new window for each new site. In about 5 minutes, I upgraded for free online to Internet explorer 8, and it has the tab browsing and more.

Only thing I was a bit disappointed about, but this is merely preference, was that the power could was black. I think it would look better and more cohesive if it were white as well.

As things progress I hope I will have even more great things to say about this notebook.

Product is very decent however the 3-Cell battery is not the way to go. On a full charge the battery displays 99% charged with 1 hour and 46 minutes remaining. Not only is this a short battery duration, I clocked the 1hr.46 minutes remaining on a separate clock and actually only got 56 minutes out of the full charge. This is definitely the reason why MSI is making the same netbook model with improved 6 cell battery units. Go for the extra [...] bucks for the 6 cell battery.

113 of 116 people found the following review helpful.
A netbook with laptop performance
By Deep Spaceus
Pros: Good performance, nice size screen
Cons: Large, heavy battery, battery life

I got this netbook to have something small and light to do light stuff like surf the web and write the occasional letter. When I opened the box I was surprised by the size of the battery. It did not look like the one in the picture. When I inserted it, it stuck out of the back of the chassis for about an inch. You do not see this in the pictures. The battery shown in the pictures is inaccurate, and appears to be a three cell battery rather than the chunky six cell battery that this thing actually comes with. So beware, with the battery this thing is nine inches wide, not the 7.9 listed in the specs. It also adds at least a half pound of weight to the listed 3.02 pounds in the spec. And for all this, you still only get about four hours of regular use. If you are looking for a small, light netbook that will run on battery all day, this is not for you.
On the other hand, if you are looking for performance that is equivalent to a low end laptop but much better than the average netbook, this is the one. It comes with 2GB of memory instead of the 1GB standard in most netbooks. It has a larger screen than most. It comes with the full version Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit instead of Windows 7 Starter 32 bit (read handicapped). This means that you get Windows 7 Aero and all the other normal Windows stuff that is missing from the starter version.
I uninstalled Windows Office trial and MS Works. No need to buy much software these days. I then loaded OpenOffice (MS Office compatible office suite), VLC Media Player (plays any media you need), Google Chrome (the fastest browser out there), Picassa (for organizing and sharing photos), Photo Pos Pro (great full feature picture editor), and TrueCrypt (creates encrypted virtual partitions to store the stuff you don’t want seen if the netbook is stolen), all free open source programs. I also uninstalled the Norton 60 day trial software and installed Vipre (not free, but currently the best protection). Then I tested watching videos, editing photos, working on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, etc. This little guy handled everything without a hitch, many times handling having several of these programs open at the same time.
In conclusion, I really like this netbook and have started using it for more things than I originally envisioned. If you want a mini laptop, this is it. You just have to live with the clunky battery.

59 of 62 people found the following review helpful.
Very nice netbook
By LH
Overall, I very much like the Gateway LT3119u. Compared to my previous notebook (HP tx1020us tablet with Vista), I enjoying using this notebook a lot more.

I bought this laptop from [...]. It includes a 6-cell battery, which is different from the 3-cell battery that are in the pictures. The 6-cell battery juts out from the back; if you search for “Gateway LT3103u”, you can see how it looks.

– Look and Feel –

The netbook is fairly light (less than 3.5 lbs), even with the 6-cell battery. The design feels solid, and overall, I am happy with the look and feel. With the extra battery, the back looks a little ugly on first impression. However, after a few days, you really won’t care about it. Also, it angles downward so that the netbook is lifted up from the desk surface to allow better ventilation. In other words, there is a reason why the battery juts back and down like that.

The actual act of opening the cover is not as easy as other netbooks, but I got used to it quickly.

Pros: Feels nice and sturdy. Looks nice from the front view.
Cons: Looks a little ugly from the back view, but you get used to it.

– Keyboard, Touchpad, Screen, Speakers, Webcam –

I love the keyboard; it types very well compared to my previous laptop. The keys are big and I have had very little trouble typing. I would like the arrow keys to be a bit bigger, but when I compared to other netbooks, the sizes are comparable. Thus, there is nothing to complain about when comparing to other models.

The touchpad works after I reinstalled the driver (more details below). After that, it does multi-touch as advertised, and I am happy with it. The touchpad button is a single bar where you can press either side to get a left click or right click. I know some individuals do not like this, but I have no problem with it.

The screen is lovely, though I may be biased because I came from a touchscreen notebook which had grainy look. On full brightness (which occurs automatically when it is plugged in), it looks very crisp and clear.

The speakers are mediocre. The are located at the bottom front of the notebook, and they do not sound very good. My previous laptop had Altec Lansing speakers, so I guess I am spoiled.

Webcam works. I don’t use a webcam.

Pros: Keyboard, Screen
Cons: Speakers
Nothing special: Touchpad (after software fix), Webcam

– Performance, Graphics, Battery Life –

I found the performance to be good:

- Bootup time is very fast.
- It only occasionally lags when running applications, but never to the point of frustration.
- I did disable Windows Aero, as I am somewhat picky with my performance, and I found closing windows to be slightly slower than what I would like if Aero is enabled.
- I was able to stream a 720p YouTube video with no issue.

I have not tried pushing the graphics of the machine, as I do not believe it is reasonable to treat this machine as a gaming / graphics device. It is a netbook to be used, at most, for casual gaming. I did try turning on the Bubbles screensaver (built-in), and it lags after about 10 Bubbles. I found that amusing, but it also illustrates that this machine cannot support good graphics. It *can* play videos, though, and that’s really all I need.

Battery life is low compared to other netbooks. I do not use my netbook intensively, so I am okay with this. However, if you want a netbook that can last 6+ hours, this will not do it unless you are willing to carry around a spare battery. I should point out that, given how nice this netbook is, you may seriously want to consider getting a spare battery instead of getting different netbook.

The netbook stays cool. The AC adapter gets hot, though.

Pros: Basic Performance (after disabling Aero), Stays cool
Cons: Battery Life, Graphics, AC Adapter gets hot

– Software –

This netbook has the full Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), not Windows 7 Starter. This is a very good thing, as Windows 7 Starter is limited in what you can do.

Amazingly enough, this machine has essentially no bloatware. I am unsure if this is due to Gateway’s choices of pre-installed software, or the Microsoft Signature program, which claims to remove bloatware. I only uninstalled 2 or 3 items. Definitely a nice thing.

Looking at the C: , it claims it has a capacity of 219 GB. About 17 GB or 19 GB was used out-of-the-box for the OS and pre-installed software. After doing a Windows Update and installing my own software, I have 194 GB free out of the available 219 GB.

NOTE: I believe the remaining 30 GB of the 250 GB hard drive is used to contain backup data. The Gateway Recovery Management program probably accesses this hidden 30 GB section. I do not see a separate partition through Windows Explorer, so this is just a guess.

One thing to note is that, out-of-the-box, the touchpad did not support vertical scrolling (on the right side of the touchpad), nor did it support multi-gesture. I am unsure if this is b/c Gateway failed to properly configure my netbook, or if the Microsoft Signature program removed this support unintentionally. In any case, I had to reinstall the driver. After I did that, everything works fine. More details below.

Pros: Windows 7 full (not Starter). Virtually no bloatware.
Cons: Touchpad does not work out of the box, you will need to install the driver. Note that after you do this, this “con” goes away.

For those interested, I installed the following software on my machine: Adobe Flash Plugin, Digsby, Foxit Reader, GNOME Office (AbiWord, Gnumeric, Dia), K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (32-bit) (comes with Media Player Classic), K-Lite Codec Pack (64-bit), Launchy, Notepad++, Opera Web Browser, PhotoScape, Picasa, Synergy+, Ultimate Windows Tweaker, uTorrent, Vista Start Menu, Winamp.

I uninstalled the following: Adobe Reader (I use Foxit Reader instead), Microsoft Office 2010 app thingy (it was 6 mb, so I’m pretty sure it’s not the actual MS Office suite), Microsoft Zune.

– Ports / Accessibility –

I will not list the ports / card readers / etc. here, but I will mention that this does not have an HDMI port, nor Bluetooth hardware. For external video, it only has a VGA port.

The bottom of the computer has panels to access the hard drive and RAM. Unfortunately, the RAM support is capped at 2 GB, so you cannot really upgrade that. Though, if you ever have bad RAM, you can rest assured you can switch it easily. Personally, I’m thinking about switching to a solid-state hard drive in the future, since that makes the machine lighter and faster.

Pros: Easy access for upgrading / switching parts.
Cons: No HDMI, no Bluetooth.

– Price –

About $400 at Amazon, Microsoft, Newegg, and Microcenter. Very good price for a dual-core netbook.

– Wrap-up –

As stated at the beginning, I really do like this device. It satisfies my basic needs of a netbook fairly well, and is small enough that I do not feel as if I am lugging around a heavy object. It has a few disadvantages, most notably the battery life, but, personally, most of the disadvantages do not really matter to me. This is especially true given the low price tag.

– Touchpad Issue –

The touchpad only works with basic functionality, out-of-the-box. You cannot use it to scroll (i.e. moving your finger up and down on the right side does not scroll), nor can you use any multi-touch gesture. Furthermore, you cannot change any settings in the Mouse settings under Control Panel.

Search for “Alps Touchpad” at the Gateway Drivers support site. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE 64 BIT VERSION FOR WINDOWS 7. When I installed it, it told me that I was about to install an older driver than the one that came with the machine. I installed it anyways, and now everything works. More options appear in the Mouse settings under Control Panel.

I should state that I do not know the cause of this. As mentioned above, either Gateway incorrectly configured my machine, or Microsoft uninstalled it through their Microsoft Signature program. In any case, re-installing the driver fixes the issue.

38 of 40 people found the following review helpful.
Blurs the line between netbooks and laptops
By Chris O
I like bullet point reviews, so I’ll try that here with a review of a nice little netbook made by a player I didn’t realize was still in the game: Gateway.

Pros:

- 11.6″ screen is larger than most “standard” netbooks on the market. The extra inch makes a big difference (supply your own Michael Scott joke here)

- Dual AMD processors. They’re only running at 1.2gHz, but again, this makes a big difference. I run Office2K7, light gaming (Braid, Fate, World of Goo), Magellan MapSend, Netflix streaming, and others all without even the slightest hitch. This might also have a little to do with…

- 2GB RAM. The “standard” is 1GB and the priority when you get one of those should be to upgrade up to 2GB as soon as possible. Especially if you’re running Windows 7. The 2GB supplied in the Gateway gives you plenty of breathing room and saves you about $50.00 right off the bat since you don’t have to worry about buying another GB of RAM.

- Windows 7 Premium. Speaking of saving money, this will save you another $80 because you won’t have to upgrade the ridiculous Starter version that most ‘books are bundled with. The last netbook I had was an ASUS that came with Win7 Starter and after 2 days of yanking my hair out, I wiped it and installed Ubuntu because I couldn’t deal with how hamstrung Starter is.

- Etc: ATI Radeon X1270 graphics adapter…pretty nice. Textured palm-rest. Not overly burdened with bloatware (I only had to uninstall 3 or 4 things). Long power cord. Good looking. Runs as cool as other netbooks.

Cons:

- The battery. I replaced an ASUS netbook with 14 hours of battery life with this one and I’m lucky to get 4 hours out of it. Not only that, but (as another reviewer has mentioned), the battery sticks waaaay out of the back. It’s really kind of silly looking and is somehow heavier than the 14 hour ASUS battery. It also seems to take quite awhile to charge.

- The keyboard. It’s a chiclet style, and for some reason I just don’t like it much. The keys seem too big and flat. The layout is otherwise OK, though.

- Still won’t get mistaken for a “real” computer. This is a pretty well equipped machine, but it’s still a netbook. Relative to other netbooks, it’s great! But compared to even lower class laptops, the warts show. This is not a ding on this particular netbook, but rather the class of machine as a whole. But hey, you’re not buying a netbook to run Photoshop and Premiere and to render your 3D movie, right? Keep your expectations where they should be and you ought to be pretty happy.

Overall I’m very pleased with this Gateway and can honestly say it’s the best netbook I’ve owned (of 4 others). For the price, you really can’t beat it.

Try This!
So glad Amazon.com is offering this product especially for the e-Machines computer and listing the eligible model numbers. The low price convinced me not to wait any longer to buy it.
I received my 1GB RAM in 4 days over the weekend from CalvinNHobbs by using my Amazon.com gift e-card. The package came from USPS.
I was on Windows Vista and only working on medium speed from my provider. Their was no need to convert to Windows 7. However, if I wanted to update to Windows 7, I would need the maximum of 1GB.
This time, I’m going all the way to the max with 2GB. This is the most that my computer can handle. Having added 1GB last March, I couldn’t believe how much of a welcomed change it made to my computer instantly. Start up is faster, downloading is faster, playing a mystery-adventure video game was so much easier. A time-saver.
The best thing about shopping on Amazon.com for exactly what I needed is you don’t have to hunt for the item all over town in every store. You can sit in your chair at home, do your research and buy it online on Amazon.com.

Installation:
Completely unplug your computer and console from the wall outlet or surge protector. Laying your console on a table or stable chair will help. Remove the 2 LARGE screws on the back of the console. Do NOT remove any small screws. Slide lid off.
***Make sure you touch something metal before you start on your opened console. If you shock the motherboard, your computer is over with. It is done and dead***
Touch a metal door knob to release any electric shock before touching your console. Just walking on the carpet can cause that finger tip shock you get.
Clean the dust out of your console so as not to cause fire and to improve the performance of your computer.
Hold the RAM at the sides. Do not touch the sides with the black boxes. Do not put your thumb on the black boxes. Keep your old RAM in its slot. The one that came with the console. Your warranty will not be good if you remove it.
If your warranty is over, go ahead and upgrade both slots to a higher RAM.
With a screwdriver, gently open the beige levers (clips) back from the available empty slot.
Look at the groove in the middle of your RAM. This goes into the slot. One half is long, the other half is short. Put the short side in the empty slot, perhaps at an angle and let it click in place. The lever will move and lock over it. Now down to the long half and gently push it in with your thumb. The clip should move and lock over it.
Now close your console, slide lid back on, put LARGE screws back in. Check that all connections are in good. Plug all your stuff back into the electric outlet or surge protector.
Now turn on your computer as you normally do. if you see a message that says, “amount of RAM does not match…”, Don’t worry about it. Just press “Enter” button.
You will immediately see the difference on your screen and in the loading.

if you go to “Control Panel”, “System and Maintenance”, Welcome Center, you shall see you have 2.00 GB RAM installed, 1GB (1024mb) + 1GB (1024mb) = 2048mb.

If your computer did not load when turned on and you hear the fan and the monitor goes off or black, this means you have the RAM in the wrong way. Try it again. Just put the RAM in the slot the other way, with groove down and lock into place.

One more thing to do. Press your Microsoft button. Click on “Computer”, then “System Properties”, then “Advance System Settings” (Continue). In the Performance section, click “Settings”, then click “Advanced”, then click “Change”. Click and put a blue dot in “Custom Size”.

Now where it says “Initial Size” (MB), change 512, 1024 or 1536 into 2048. Type in 2048. This mean you have 2GB which is 2048mb.
Now in “Maximum Size” (MB), change 1024, 2048 or 3072 into 4096. Type in 4096. Always “Times 2″ the amount you have in “Initial Size” and place the answer into “Maximum Size”.

Now it should say:

 Initial Size (MB): 2048
Maximum Size (MB): 4096

Now click “Set”, then “OK”. Close the windows. Restart your computer.
Now you are ready to enjoy your computer to your hearts content. As you can see, their is no need to order a higher speed from your internet company.
Your computer is now ready to install Windows 7 Starter, if you desire to.

This is my second replacement for the power cord. The first one from another manufacturer was much shorter and the cord would not stay in the brick. This one comes with the same length (or longer) as the original, and has a power light in the brick to boot. Seems like a quality product, plus quick shipping.

Most helpful customer reviews

8551 of 8710 people found the following review helpful.
Fantastic device – pick your Kindle!
By FreeSpirit
Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.
